Comenius in Denmark 4- 11 December , 2010
Theme: Sustainable development
VB, BD og TJ
What do the students have to do in order to sign up?
1. Write a letter of motivation in English with photo, in which they explain what their personal goals are, why they want to participate, what their home situation is (as hosts) and what their strengths are as individuals.
2. Sign a contract before travelling or hosting where they agree to:
- follow the rules of the host country
- no drinking, smoking or drugs
- be "good citizens" and "good hosts"
How to use the "Letters of application" from our students.
-in order to choose and send the letter to host group deadline 3 weeks
-to introduce the students to each other and help choose partners
What do the teachers have to do within 2 weeks from now?
- get OKs from administration
- get the class to write these letters of introduction
- get the class started on our project, or at least plan when to start
- choose which teachers are coming to Denmark and which subjects are represented initially.
- Denmark and Germany figure out which IT platforms to use. There are special considerations regarding schools, in particular England, that have to be met.
- Juliane will collect our mailing lists, Skype addresses, etc.
What do the teachers have to do before meeting in Denmark?
Individually
- upload the letters of introduction to Dropbox in folders (dossiers)
- fill out the forms regarding teachers, again in Dropbox
- upload the Dictionaries - just to be safe. Bring a copy on a USB key
- upload the responses to the film - just to be safe. Bring a copy on a USB key.
In classes:
1. Same text - the film An Inconvenient Truth
-Watch An Inconvenient Truth with your class
- Answer the same questions. Denmark provides these.
- Prepare 1-2 minute ppt. or doc. to illustrate your ideas and bring it with you
2. Dictionary
- Use the set of ideas presented by Italy (see ppt) to write a mind-map of your classe's ideas about sustainable development. As far as you can now because we can always add on.
- Write these up in two languages: your own and English. Feel free to try to write them in other European languages as well. This part is a language exercise.
- Remember to include where you got these ideas from, perhaps they were from text books, in part, or Internet or government hand-outs. (a bibliography at the end of the ppt. or doc.
When in Denmark
Danish plans for organizing discussions.
- small groups will present to each other. Compare and explain. A more formal written statement will come before the meeting in December.
There are rules of good conduct.
- These groups choose the best content, etc.
- Plenum meeting , (everybody) - where we hear which presentations were chosen, where were the surprises when listening to each other, are there any solutions proposed or found? Are there new questions that arose?
- This form will be used in two rounds, one for each item above. They will not happen on the same day, we hope. Time: about 125 minutes each time.
Didactic ideas behind this form:
We want to train how to present and discuss. We want the pupils to be comfortable. We want as many as possible to participate actively. We want to consider ideas thoroughly. We do not expect to save the world at this first meeting. We do hope to set the stage for further cooperative work. It is best if the students find the interesting questions rather than have them dictated by teachers. Teachers facilitate rather than give lectures. Teachers are present at these discussions, of course. We all practice a Danish form of teaching. Later we will end up comparing each others' ways of doing things and learning from best practices.
More
There will be excursions, outings, events and classes. We need more time to plan. We expect that everybody attends these. Some events will be informal things to break the ice. There is a musical one evening. There will be " a culinary experience".
We want our students to benefit from the many native language speakers present, both students and teachers. This means we hope to set up language classes in French, Spanish, German and English for 2-3 lessons (45 min. each) during the week.
